Más que una trama lineal, la novela funciona como una evocación nostálgica y sensual de la juventud, escrita con el estilo barroco, lírico y exuberante característico de Umbral. La obra ganó el Premio Nadal en 1975 y está considerada una de sus novelas más importantes.
