Memories of the house of the dead
Collect the experiences of the character Aleksandr Petrovich Goryánchikov in Siberian prison for killing his wife in the first year of his marriage. Each chapter of the work describes the anecdotes, the different themes and conversations or experiences that prisoners live, their feelings about Christmas, summer, attempts to escape and other details of Russian society, administration and culture. This book, which was published in chapters in a magazine that the author founded together with his brother Mikhail, reflects his own experiences in prison, lack of freedom, cold, loneliness, hard forced labour, the kind of people he lived with and who, despite being criminals, describe with a great humanity. In this work, a deep reflection is made on criminal psychology. He transmits his knowledge of the Bible, a book that the author himself read daily in prison and from which he derived his idea of the use of suffering as liberation and spiritual salvation.
