Interesting account of a two-handed crime of passion with Ramalho Ortiz.
The Maia tells the story of the deterioration of a great Portuguese family through two of its members: the old Afonso de Maia, the patriarch and an admired man and his grandson, the young Carlos de Maia, idealist, dilettant and romantic, representative of finisecular elegance and authentic protagonist of the story. In the thread of detachment, the conclusion of time and a way of life, the characters live their time and their life and the novel echoes the rites of love (and the hidden bourgeois sex of the 19th century, of adulterer or of payment).
