The book is a fictitious autobiography that describes the life of Maximilian Aue, a former SS officer who decades later tells the story of a crucial part of his life: when he was an active member of the forces of the Third Reich. In the novel, Aue accepts his responsibility for his participation in the massacres of Jews, but most of the time he feels more like an observer than a participant
